Commissioned Piece <A Ship on Land>(2023.02.17)
~ Composer's message ~
Two of the most celebrated buildings designed by Kenzo Tange, the architect renowned as one of the foremost representatives of Japanese modernism, are located in Kagwa Prefecture: the Kagawa Prefectural Office Building and the Kagawa Prefectural Gymnasium.
The idea of this work came from the latter, a building with a highly distinctive form that seems to rise up from the ground like a ship. With a structure whose expression seems to change depending on the viewing angle, the building conveys the impression of unbalanced rhythm. By reinterpreting this image in musical form, my aim has been to explore fresh textural potential for the piano.
I hope that every pianist who tackles this piece will discover the point of contact between the piano and architecture to weave a rich musical texture.
